LESSONS

Skill Sessions

The Infant Swimming Resource Self-Rescue™ survival swimming program is a specialized course designed to equip children with life-saving water safety skills. The commonly referenced 6–8 week timeframe is a national average—not a guarantee—as each child progresses at their own pace based on their individual needs, consistency, and readiness. Lessons are 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day.

We teach children beginning at 6 months, customizing every lesson to your child’s developmental stage, medical history, and prior experience in the water to ensure safe, effective results.

Infants and toddlers who are not yet walking independently are taught to roll onto their backs, maintain a stable floating position, and breathe until help arrives.

For children who are walking, we introduce the Swim-Float-Swim technique. Students learn to swim underwater for short distances, roll onto their backs to rest and breathe, and then resume swimming toward an exit where they can safely get themselves out of the water or wait for help to arrive.

Once students are fully skilled, they will practice ISR skills in clothing during lessons, including everyday items like shoes, diapers, or seasonal attire, preparing them for real-world scenarios.

We also recommend continuing with maintenance lessons once a child is fully skilled to reinforce their Self-Rescue™ swimming skills as they grow and develop physically.

Maintenance Lessons are essential for maintaining and continuing your child’s ISR Self-Rescue™ skills. These lessons are available anytime and are highly recommended at least 1–2 times per month to ensure regular practice and prevent technique issues from developing.

After completing the initial skills program, as they grow more confident, a child’s technique may start to waver—they might swim farther before rolling over, keep their head up, or try new movements they see from other children or adults. Maintenance Lessons help reinforce proper ISR techniques, correct any developing habits, and ensure your child’s skills remain safe, effective, and reliable, while maintaining their confidence in the water

Regular Maintenance Lessons give parents peace of mind that their child’s life-saving abilities continue to develop correctly, even as they explore and gain confidence in the water. We will work with you to determine the appropriate maintenance schedule for your child, as every child’s needs and pace of development are different.

**If you notice your child exhibiting any unwanted or inappropriate swimming behavior, contact me ASAP to schedule a Maintenance Lesson!

Refresher Lessons

Refresher Lessons are ideal after long periods away from the water, following major growth spurts, or on a regular schedule—often annually or a couple of times per year. Many families choose to schedule lessons before vacations, summer, or other swimming activities to ensure ongoing skill retention, boost confidence, and enhance overall water safety.

Refresher Lessons are designed to fine-tune your child’s skills and keep their ISR Self-Rescue™ abilities strong. As children grow rapidly through infancy, toddlerhood, and early childhood, changes in strength, coordination, and cognitive ability can affect previously learned Self-Rescue™ swimming skills.

Designed for students who have completed the Self-Rescue™ program, Refresher Lessons follow a condensed version of the initial sequence while maintaining all the same safety procedures and protocols. Lessons are conducted Monday through Friday, 10 minutes per day, over 1–2 weeks, with the exact number of sessions tailored to your child’s growth and skill retention since their last lesson. These lessons allow instructors to fine-tune existing skills and make any necessary adjustments to accommodate your child’s developing body and abilities.
